Simon Orpwood – Honorary Press Officer

Simon Orpwood (Press Officer for the RASC) farms in North Northumberland with his wife Caroline, together they have three sons. The farm, in the shadow of the Cheviot Hills is a mixed farm with arable, a herd of Aberdeen Angus Cattle and sheep.

Born in South Oxfordshire into a farming family Simon went to school in the Cotswolds then to Moulton Agricultural College in Northamptonshire. He spent most of 1973 and 1974 in Australia and New Zealand, based with the late John and Mig Kelly at Caramut in Victoria. John represented Australia in two Olympics in the three day event team and was a council member of the Royal Victoria Agricultural Society.

One of the key note speakers at the Oxford Farming Conference in 1982, when he married, Caroline together they bought a farm near Cirencester in Gloucestershire, then moved to Northumberland in 1987. Simon has been involved with the Royal Smithfield Club for over 34 years and is currently a Vice President. A former committee member of the Farmers’ club he is also a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Society (FRAgS).

For many years he was on the Management Committee of his local Agricultural Society, The Glendale Agricultural Society, an associate member for the RASC and he is now a Vice President. Master of the College Valley Northumberland Hunt for 16 seasons, Simon still hunts throughout the season.
