Global Agricultural Outlook and Food Security Challenges

The agricultural sector faces significant challenges over the next decade, as outlined in the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2023-2032.
This comprehensive report provides a 10-year forecast of global agricultural production, consumption, trade, and food security. The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) and the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) are leading international organisations focused on economic policy and global food security, respectively.

Global food demand is expected to grow by 1.3% annually, driven by population increases and changing diets. To meet this demand sustainably, the sector must adopt new technologies and adapt to climate change, which poses threats through extreme weather patterns and declining crop yields.

Innovations such as climate-resilient crops and digital farming platforms are critical. These tools offer farmers better insights into soil conditions and crop performance, particularly for smallholder farmers in regions like sub-Saharan Africa. Sustainable farming practices, such as agroecology and regenerative agriculture, will also play a key role in balancing food production with environmental preservation.

With collaboration and investment, particularly in vulnerable regions, the global agricultural system can rise to meet the challenges of feeding a growing world while safeguarding natural ecosystems.
