As we approach the end of 2024, I find myself reflecting on a year filled with activity and progress across the RASC network. While the weather remains unusually mild for this time of year here in the UK, I hope this newsletter finds you all in good spirits as we head into the festive season.
I’m pleased to hear that the Christchurch Show in New Zealand was a success, and we hope to include a full report in the next newsletter.
Last month, Allan Murray and I attended a special luncheon at the Farmers’ Club in London to mark the 225th anniversary of the first Royal Smithfield Show. The event coincided with the Farmers’ tractor protest in Whitehall, where an impressive 700 tractors gathered – a sight to behold, to say the least. This protest was a result of recent Government announcements of some planned and very damaging changes to farm inheritance tax laws
On a sadder note, we send our heartfelt condolences to Christine Knipe, Trustee of the RASC, on the tragic loss of her husband David, who was killed in a farming accident. Our thoughts remain with Christine and her family during this incredibly difficult time.
Meanwhile, with our son in New Zealand, lambing season has concluded, and the first batches of lambs have been weaned and sold – reportedly at better prices than last year, which is encouraging news.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members, friends, and supporters of the RASC a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for your continued dedication and support throughout 2024, and I look forward to all that we will achieve together in 2025.
