Redcatch Community Centre, winners of the Prince of Wales Award 2025

The Prince of Wales Award drew in 12 entries this year, which was reduced to 4 projects visited by the judges in April. Two of them were local shops which had been rescued from sudden closure by volunteers in their respective communities. These were in Brent Knoll, just south of Weston-super-Mare and Stogumber, situated on the edge of the Brendon Hills. The speed with which these had been set up when the closures were announced together with innovative and imaginative ways of involving and serving their surrounding areas impressed the judges. Greener and Wilder, based near Taunton who came together in 2020 to very successfully restore and develop an area as a village green 2000sq metre of wildflower meadow was planted by 80 volunteers in 2023, and apple juice is produced from their own orchard. These three projects were awarded Highly Commended Certificates.

The final project that was visited by the judges was Redcatch Community Garden in South Bristol. It was created 7 years ago from a disused bowling green, and has grown into a thriving community space, growing vegetables and flowers, preparing food for the local community and arranging wellbeing and employability sessions. It is a hive of colourful, energetic, productive and very carefully thought out activities, and was declared the winner of the 2025 Prince of Wales Award.

The Prince of Wales Award was presented on Thursday 29th May at the Opening Ceremony of the Royal Bath & West Show.
