ASA Conference 2025 Wrap-Up

The ASA Conference 2025 was a resounding success, bringing together agricultural show leaders, volunteers, and industry experts for three days of knowledge-sharing, networking, and inspiration. With an agenda packed with insightful keynote speakers, engaging panel discussions, and hands-on workshops, attendees left feeling energised and equipped with new ideas to implement in their communities.

Ray Allison’s keynote address set the tone for the event, emphasising the enduring relevance of agricultural fairs. “Ray Allison set the scene for a great conference,” said Denise Whitney (Nimbin A&I Society, NSW). His discussion on how shows can evolve while staying true to their agricultural roots resonated deeply with attendees.

Another highlight was Paul Grosmann of RM Williams, who delivered a powerful session on balancing tradition with innovation. His statement, “We’re at our worst when we try to be all things to all people, and we’re at our best when we remember who we are and why we do what we do,” left a lasting impression on many, including Ray Allison himself.

The debate on volunteer retention sparked meaningful discussions on the evolving role of volunteers in agricultural shows. Craig Debnam (Lardner Park Field Day, VIC) reflected, “I was particularly struck by the common issues we all face in organising agriculture-related events, such as managing an aging volunteer base, encouraging community participation, and adapting to the changing digital landscape.”

The session on exploring AI offered a glimpse into the future of show management, with practical insights on streamlining tasks. Joshua Antonio (WA Next Generation Group) shared, “For me, the highlight was learning how to utilise AI tools for planning and idea generation. I’ll be trying to incorporate the customised GPT shown in the session to help with NextGen planning at my own show.”

Beyond the sessions, networking was a key benefit. Maxine Wylie (Canning Agricultural Society, WA) praised the connections made, saying, “Allowing time for networking with so many passionate people brought about relevant opportunities to tell our story and listen to others.” The Gala Dinner was the perfect conclusion, celebrating the industry and fostering camaraderie.
